Book Boxes are my children’s absolute favorite gifts, and it’s easy to see why! The concept is simple yet magical: I choose a book I know they’ll love and pair it with a handful of themed gifts that bring the story to life. When they open their Book Box, they find a book alongside a collection of wrapped presents, each labeled with a page number. As they read, they get to open a surprise at just the right moment—guided by bookmarks placed throughout the book. The anticipation is thrilling, and I’ve never seen my kids read faster! They can’t wait to reach the next gift, making the experience both exciting and immersive.

The gifts can be as simple as small trinkets or as special as something they’ve been eagerly awaiting. No matter what, each present deepens their connection to the story, turning reading into an adventure.

The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy by Jeanne Birdsall is one of my all-time favorite chapter book series. After reading every book myself, I just knew my daughter would love them too. One Christmas, I created a version of this book box for her—and more recently, I gifted the same box to my niece for her birthday.

She had just turned 11, which felt like the perfect age to step into the world of these four sisters. Even more special, she’s one of four sisters herself (with a brother, too!), which made the story feel like an especially perfect fit.

One of the things I love most about this series is the warm, genuine relationship between the sisters and their father. The sibling dynamics are positive and supportive. There are a few minor elements worth noting—such as an unrequited crush on an older boy and somewhat distant parents for a side character—but these just highlight the contrast with what a great parent relationship can be. At times, the girls make passing, imaginative references to Greek gods, though these moments are light and ultimately insignificant.

All in all, this is a charming, heartfelt series that I wholeheartedly recommend—especially to readers who enjoy the sisterly bonds of Little Women and the gentle whimsy of Anne of Green Gables.
