Finding very early illustrated chapter books can be a challenge. They sit in that tricky space between picture books and longer chapter books, where stories need to be short and accessible, yet still rich enough to spark confidence in new readers. The right book has to grab attention, carry momentum, and feel rewarding to finish.
The Esme! series by Lourdes Heuer, illustrated by Marissa Valdez (Tundra Books), checks all of those boxes for me. These stories are funny, heartfelt, and full of charm, with illustrations that perfectly capture Esme’s spirited personality. I found myself smiling all the way through—and eager to reach the end.
In Troop Esme, we meet a lively girl who lives in a bustling apartment building. When a scout named Wendall knocks on her door selling cookies, Esme wants in on the action, rallying her neighbors to help. In the process, she creates her very own troop filled with friends from every floor.
In Esme’s Birthday Conga Line, the formula repeats in the best way. Esme invites each neighbor to her birthday party, and everyone contributes something to the celebration. Together they form a joyful “Birthday Conga Line” that winds through the building and straight into the party.
Esme herself is the real delight—bright, kind, and endlessly friendly. Her personality shines through every page, making the “topmost best building” feel like a place you want to visit again and again.
