When my child was ready to move on from picture books but not quite ready for chapter books, we discovered the Nate the Great series—and it was a perfect fit! While there seem to be plenty of “girly” options in this reading stage, featuring unicorns and princesses, there aren’t as many choices that might appeal to boys. That said, don’t get me wrong—my daughter loves this series too! These books are clever and engaging, and it’s so much fun to involve your little reader by asking them to predict what will happen next or solve the mystery alongside Nate.

Nate the Great is a sharp-witted detective who’s always ready to tackle a new case for a friend. Each story unfolds as he interviews witnesses, hunts for clues, and uses problem-solving skills to crack the mystery. And when a case gets especially tricky, Nate takes a moment to think it over—often with a plate of his favorite pancakes.

Some editions even include bonus activities in the back, like recipes, crafts, or games, which add another layer of fun to the experience.

I can’t recommend this series enough! I’ve gifted it to beginner readers several times, and it’s always a hit.
