My Father’s Dragon by Ruth Stiles Gannett with illustrations by Ruth Chrisman Gannett for Random House books is so clever, we really enjoyed this Newberry Award winning book! In a world where animals can talk and hold a dragon hostage, a boy named Elmer traverses Tangerina Island to free the dragon and go for a ride!

It will make you want to pack your backpack and go on an adventure to a Wild Island!

It is an early chapter book with illustrations throughout. It was exciting and fun and I honestly can’t recommend this one enough. Everyone will love it!

We did find an animated movie version made in 2022 that is  available to watch on Netflix. I would say that the movie is targeted to older children. It doesn’t follow the book very closely and has a lot of ominous music and an overall dark appearance making a scary atmosphere for some kids. If you have kids who aren’t sensitive in that way it would be fun to watch and discuss the differences between the book and the movie!
