The King of Kindergarten by Derrick Barnes and Vanessa Brantley-Newton for Nancy Paulsen Books is a great children’s picture book you can use to introduce your pre-k student to confidently walk into kindergarten for the first time. It introduces a child to all of the things they can expect for the first time going to school, waking up early to get dressed, riding the bus, meeting many children as you walk into the building, a new teacher, new classmates, music, books, circle time, recess, lunch, and more.
Children (and sometimes adults too!) benefit greatly from knowing what to expect in a new environment. As much as you may talk about it with your little one, seeing it through a story is another way of preparing them. It helps them even more to see an illustrated character who looks like them! That’s one of the many reasons that diversity in books is important!
Don’t worry, if you have a little queen at home there is another version of this book for her too!
This would be appropriate for anyone entering kindergarten.
Ages: 5-6
