I Spy Christmas: A Book of Picture Riddles
Photographs by Walter Wick, riddles by Jean Marzollo for Scholastic Books

This book might be 100% nostalgia for me—I loved it as a kid—but even today, it absolutely holds its own. I have a child who loves I Spy books, and the ones by Walter Wick and Jean Marzollo are a clear favorite. We’ve spent countless hours poring over this single book, far more than any other in our house.

It’s been a go-to during quiet time while the baby naps, at bedtime, or just for fun in between activities. The timeless photographs are packed with intricate details, and the riddles are delightfully challenging. For preschoolers, they can be tricky, but that just makes it more fun! You can guide them with games like “hot and cold” or offer tips to help them find hidden objects. You can even adjust the difficulty, encouraging them to find something easier or letting them work through the riddles with questions like, “What other kinds of keys might this mean besides one that opens doors?” The opportunities for creativity and learning are endless.

Older kids and even adults can get in on the fun, too. It’s a wonderfully quiet, low-stimulation activity that the whole family can enjoy—something I definitely appreciate during the often-hectic Christmas season!

If you’re looking for something your preschooler can enjoy more independently, there’s also an “easy reader” version with photo clues, making it perfect for solo play. Find it here!
