Hannah Sparkles Hooray for the First Day of School! by Robin Mellom and Vanessa Brantley-Newton for Harper Books is a sweet story of a first grader who is looking forward to the first day of school and making new friends. When her sparkling personality doesn’t exactly win friends she is worried and takes some time to reset. She tries to watch and listen to the interests of other students.

It’s hard to find a first day of school book about anything other than kindergarten. It just so happens that my daughter is entering first grade this year so I was excited to find this book about friendship. This book is a great lesson anytime of year when it comes to making new friends!

Ages: 5-7

Themes: first grade, first day of school, friendship, empathy, kindness, gentleness
