This children’s picture book is about grief and loss. It is beautiful.
We recently had a loss in our family and talking about death with kids can be a hard thing to do. This book is frank and poetic. It is about a Fox discovering a dead bird. Once he realizes that the bird is not moving, nor playing, the bird is dead he cries not knowing why. Grief can be different for everyone and that is okay. The conclusion that Fox comes to along with his guide the moth is that what they can do is remember the bird. Remembering will honor who the bird was.
I like that there’s no religious aspects of this book at all. I think this book is a great introduction to physical death and grief. Once the conversation has started you can talk more specifically about the spiritual aspect in your own words with your child.
We read this book months before the loss in my family. I thought it was a great way to talk about death and loss before there was a personal connection. It gave them a little context to what death is before experiencing it themselves.
