I picked up these books for my niece who loves animals. These books are historical fiction based around 1900 about a girl who loves animals and tries to help injured animals. She befriends the town vet and has a grandpa who teaches her about nature.

These are good middle-grade-sized fiction books at just over 100 pages. The books include wide spacing and some illustrations. If you have a child beginning to read chapter books this series would be a great one to try. I only read these two books numbers 3 and 4 of a six-book series. However, I did like the family values and the facts about animals that were laced through the books. I do have to say that in the 4th book, A Prickly Problem, Calpurnia does punch a teasing boy in the nose. There is no adult supervision at the time and no consequences for either person involved. There was no violence or teasing in the “Who Gives a Hoot?”

Just FYI so you can decide for yourself if these are books you want to bring into your home. I personally love the freedom to be the gatekeeper of my house and choose what comes in and what is introduced to my kids. That’s my job as their parent!

For us, these were fun reads and I can always have a conversation about not condoning violence when we read things that I may not agree with as a parent.

The link to purchase the books is an Amazon Affiliate link, which means that I may receive a small compensation for promoting the book, while the price is the same for you! Win, win!
