Bring books to life! We brought Little House in the Big Woods to life this spring by visiting historic log homes in a local park. Being from the Midwest we had several parks with log homes to choose from! We discussed some scenes from the book and imagined what it would have been like to live in a home like this 2 hundred years ago. You can see all of the details at my instagram account… https://www.instagram.com/p/C9DOw-PPfd0/

It is a great read-aloud for little ones. It consists of shorter vignettes and Pa telling stories within the story. Perfect for little ones who are still learning listening stamina for read-alouds!

I had not read these books as a child, so this was also my first time reading it. There is a reference to spanking and also a few passages about body image that to my modern ears were disappointing. It did start some conversations with my 6-year-old daughter about how everyone is made differently and differences do not mean that one person is better than another!

Overall my daughter and I did enjoy this book and went on to read, Little House on the Prairie too.

Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder, illustrated by Garth Williams for HarperCollins books.

I would recommend this for

Ages: 8-10 (5-12 read aloud)

Themes: Family, Bravery, Outdoors
